Four students receive State Department Critical Language Scholarship

Four students in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, one of whom also earned a degree from Olin Business School, have received the U.S. State Department’s Critical Language Scholarship for summer 2015.

The undergraduates are: Carl Hooks, an incoming junior studying  international and area studies, with a minor in Chinese language and culture, in Arts & Sciences; and Ahmet Yucesoy, an incoming junior also studying international and area studies, with a minor in Arabic, in Arts & Sciences.

The recent graduates are: Daniel Bromberg, who studies Persian and, in May, earned bachelor’s degrees in anthropology, in Arts & Sciences, and health-care management, in Olin Business School; and Taryn Marashi, who also studies Persian and, in May, earned a master’s degree in international and area studies.

The four students are spending seven to 10 weeks in intensive language institutes studying the language and culture of various cities. Hooks is studying in Dalian, China; Yucesoy is studying in Ibri, Oman; and Bromberg and Marashi are studying in Dushanbe, Tajikistan.
